INSTRUCTION FOR DRESSING IN NUN'S LATIN RITE HABIT
LATIN RITE VARIATIONS MAY APPLY
1) Do not put the hard vinyl wimple on till the very last.
2) COIF: Put white soft polyester or cotton coif on over head, or pull back over face and head from under chin and tuck in all hair.
Velcro at back of head. Keep front flaps tucked down flat under tunic (or safety pin front flaps down onto T-shirt).
3) TUNIC: Find front of tunic, pull over head, arms up, avoid arms in hip slits and pockets.
4) BELT: (not included), black or brown leather belt with matching shoes or sandals.
5) SCAPULAR: Pull scapular over head. Benedictines wear scapular over belt.
6) HEAD BAND: Hard white vinyl coif head crown optional:
(Some orders of nuns do not wear the optional white crown.)
Adjustable size with velcro keeping it comfortable and snug.
Keep front of head band over middle forehead, over front top ridge of soft coif.
7) VEIL: with plastic reinforcement strip: Lay veil flat on table or bed, inside out. Find hidden 39" sleeve at front edge of Veil. Find 1 1/4" slit near end of hidden sleeve.
8) VEIL: without plastic strip in veil sleeve: Fold veil in half, widthwise, inside out. Place one small safety pin in veil in veil 12" from each end - 5" from back bottom of veil - one smell safety pin - not two. Turn veil right side out. Find center front of veil, center veil over head, coif, crown band. Allow 1" overlap of veil over front of crown band. Pin small safety pin in front of each ear from under coif to hold the front of veil down. Place one more straight pin at top of head, through veil and coif.
9) WIMPLE / GUIMPE: Smaller wimples / guimpes are easier to put on and wear. If it's a large or long wimple hard vinyl like cardboard, do not put it on front wise. Put it on over back shoulders first, contour to shoulders, velcro at front to neck / chest. Slowly slide velcroed hard wimple around to center front of chest. An optional cross or crucifix can be worn over or under the hard or soft wimple. If a cloth / fabric/ starched wimple is used instead of the hard vinyl type, the same dressing steps are used as with a hard vinyl wimple / guimpe to avoid creasing wimple / guimpe while putting on rest of habit. Use black headed straight pins with black veil.
